If you're planning to breastfeed...

May 15, 2015

I always knew I would breastfeed my baby.  My mom breastfed me, I knew the benefits and I was determined. I was reading about breastfeeding the moment I got my “big fat positive”.  I wanted to be as prepared as possible. I knew about Le Leche League and I even looked up the nearest one to me and wrote down the meeting times and dates, but I was hesitant to actually show up there. It was very clear on their website that expectant mothers were welcome AND encouraged to come but I was still hesitant.

Will I be the only one there who is not currently nursing?

Will they think I am strange for coming “so early”?

Will the women be friendly?

Fast forward a few more months into my pregnancy… My sis in law was celebrating her birthday and a big group of her friends took her out to celebrate. There were two other pregnant women at the table with and someone asked “are any of you planning to breastfeed”. I spoke up with an enthusiastic “YES, I am definitely going to nurse my baby!” She asked me if I had made it to a LLL meeting yet and invited me to tag along with her the next time she went.

Going was one of the BEST things I did during my pregnancy (my birth class and massage were other great things). I was NOT the only one there who wasn’t currently nursing, no one thought I was strange, no one thought I was there “too early” and all the women were friendly. I felt welcomed and supported. I was able to make relationships with the leaders and other women in attendance. I found a support system; I knew that if I needed help once my baby arrived that they would be there for me.  I knew I could count on them and they didn’t disappoint. I became a regular at that meeting, called crying on the phone to a leader a time or two and had a beautiful nurturing breastfeeding relationship with my baby.

If you are pregnant and want wanting to breastfeed I can't encourage you enough to go to a LLL meeting.

To all the leader at Le Leche League of Glassboro, thanks for all you did for me and for all the other women in our community.
