Tis the season! We are gobbling till we wobble and Christmas music is on every radio station. Another hallmark of the season is the inevitable cold and flus. Last winter was my Mother’s last winter with us. She was dying of Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) and it was paramount that we minimize her exposure to colds. A respiratory infection is a common cause of death for ALS patients and I could not have my toddler share a cold with Grammie.
Obviously the best treatment is prevention, and the best prevention is proper and frequent hand washing. We also use Young Living Therapeutic-grade essential oils. Essential Oils are powerful plant extracts, more potent than dry herbs and an amazing natural choice that have been used for thousands of years for their health benefits. My favorite essential oil for this time of year is called “Thieves Oil”; the name itself has an interesting story. During the plague of the 15th century, a group of thieves robbed the homes of plague victims without catching the highly contagious plague themselves. When they were finally brought to justice they were spared the death penalty if they shared their secret, and Thieves oil was born!
Thieves oil is highly antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal essential oil made up of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary. If that wasn’t a convincing enough story for you, how about the fact that Weber State University documented that Thieves kills 99.96% on airborne bacteria. Aside from the Essential Oil, there is also a line of household cleaning products, a hand sanitizer and a soap. My favorite way to use thieves is diffusing in cool mist essential oil diffuser. The fine mist of the diffuser cleanses the air and is a must have during winter play dates. We run the diffuser when we have guests over and at bedtime. It is an easy way to get a room full of people treated without any hassle.
Thieves oil is also great if you do find yourself under the weather. Other oils to be used are RC (a respiratory and congestion blend) and Raven. Both are amazing to diffuse or apply to the chest to help ease breathing! They are great for coughs, chest congestion and bronchitis. We had no colds last winter and for that I will always be grateful to thieves and my diffuser! My Mother passed in August from complications of ALS and thankfully not a cold my toddler unknowingly shared. I love using essential oils in my natural medicine cabinet and know you will as well. Amanda and Ginnie gave me a maximum word count because they know I can go on and on, feel free to contact me with any questions!
