Make your own sunscreen!

What do doulas do when they aren’t at a birth and are baby free??

They make their own sunscreen!

So basically, I started to research sunscreen and its ingredients one day. I then decided that I did not want to put some of the ingredients on my precious baby’s skin. So I began to research more gentle and natural sunscreen options. My jaw dropped when I saw the price tags for the little 8 oz tubes. Then the real fun began. I knew there had to be a way to make this product myself. I came across this web page and decided to try it out for myself:http://wellnessmama.com/2558/natural-homemade-sunscreen-recipe/

The recipe is easy to follow and it’s flexible, so you can change it around to make it meet the needs of you and your family. These are the ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup almond or olive oil (can infuse with herbs first if desired)

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (natural SPF 4)

  • 1/4 cup beeswax

  • 2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (This is a non-nano version that won’t be absorbed into the skin. Be careful not to inhale the powder). This makes a natural SPF of 20+ or more can be added.)

  • Optional: 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil

  • Optional: 2 tablespoons Shea Butter (natural SPF 4-5)

  • Optional: Essential Oils, Vanilla Extract or other natural extracts to suit your preference

I made my batch with olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E oil, and zinc oxide. I added more zinc oxide to make the SPF stronger and I added more beeswax to make the lotion thicker. It is really easy to do, you just combine all ingredients except the zinc oxide in a mason jar. Place the mason jar in a saucepan that has a few inches of water in it. Put the heat on medium, and let all the ingredients melt together. You can stir it occasionally. After everything is completely melted, I poured the solution into smaller mason jars for storage. Then you sprinkle in your zinc oxide and stir well. Then that’s it! I saved money and had plenty of sunscreen to last for the summer! Once it cooled it was ready to be used. It smells wonderful too!
